How To Safely Get Rid Of Brown Recluse Spiders Around Your Roseville Home

May 08, 2023

Brown Recluse Spiders Are The Most Misidentified Spiders

Unless you went to school to study arachnology, the odds are high that you wouldn’t be able to pick out the brown recluse from the daddy longlegs if presented with multiple brown spiders. But don’t feel bad. While most people can easily recognize a black widow spider due to that unmistakable red hourglass marking on its abdomen, spotting a brown recluse is not simple. Most people wouldn’t be able to accurately identify a brown recluse since it looks no different than any other brown spider. These dangerous spiders are typically yellowish-brown or light brown in color with a dark mark on their dorsum that resembles a violin. But their eye pattern gives them away; six eyes in pairs with a space dividing each pair.

The Dangers Of A Brown Recluse Spider's Bite

The brown recluse is the most venomous spider to humans and animals among all spiders in the United States. A bizarre characteristic of a brown recluse’s bite is that you barely feel it. You would think that a person bitten by such a dangerous spider would be writhing in pain immediately. However, the danger is in the delayed response of getting treatment well after the venom has begun its destruction. A protein present in the venom causes inflammation and a dark mark at the site of the spider bite. At-home treatments can work for adults, but children will need medical attention right away.

If the worst happens and tissue starts to break down, surgery may be necessary to cut out the infected area. Left untreated, the bite from a brown recluse can cause seizures, kidney failure, and even death. Fortunately, there haven’t been any verifiable reports of fatalities in North America due to brown recluse bites.

Five Practical Tips To Prevent Future Brown Recluse Spider Problems

You have to pull out all the stops in the battle between you and arachnids in your home. To be victorious, you have to arm yourself with the most effective tools to help you win. So, to help you combat these spiders, follow the five tips below:

  1. Grab your vacuum and use the long attachment to suction up any spider webs you see.
  2. Place sticky traps in your basement, attic, and any dark corners of your house.
  3. Spray any spiders you see with apple cider vinegar, which kills the insects on contact due to its high acidity.
  4. Put down some diatomaceous earth powder in areas where spiders are likely to roam, destroying their exoskeletons and causing death.
  5. Use strong scents, like eucalyptus, as an air freshener that naturally repels spiders.

You can also try a store-bought insecticide specifically to kill and prevent spiders in your home. However, if you don’t spray them directly on brown recluses or on a surface where they’ll be walking, the result won’t be as effective. That’s why it’s always best to reach out to your local pest control to rid your home of different kinds of spiders, including the brown recluse.
