Ridding Your Home Of Cockroaches

May 08, 2023

What They Damage

Cockroaches don’t often cause structural damage to one’s home, but they can damage one’s health. Cockroach droppings are considered to be an asthma trigger. If a cockroach problem is not dealt with as soon as possible, an asthmatic individual's health may begin to deteriorate. Cockroaches can also easily spread disease as they walk over food and areas of food preparation after being in contact with sewage and garbage.

Recognizing Signs of A Problem

When cockroaches are invading your living space, you may notice feces that look similar to black pepper or coffee grounds from smaller cockroaches, or cylindrical feces from larger cockroaches. Cockroaches are nocturnal and because of this, your home can have them and you may not see them for a while. If for some reason you begin finding cockroaches during the day, this can mean that there are large numbers of them around.

How To Prevent Them

Cockroaches are talented creatures and capable of getting into your home in various ways. Once inside, they breed and multiply quickly, making it difficult to get an infestation under control. Be aware of any cracks, vents, and pipes that may be an entry point for these vile pests. Do a thorough check of any item that enters your home, as cockroaches sometimes act as stowaways and catch a ride into your home by riding in your purse, boxes, and bags.

Keep your home as clean as possible and wipe up spills immediately after they happen. Store your food in containers that utilize tight seals instead of the paper boxes they are bought in. Get rid of trash at the end of each day instead of leaving it overnight. Don’t let dishes sit dirty in the sink. Vacuum often enough to keep small pieces of food from attracting these unsavory pests.

How To Get Rid Of Them

As soon as you know you have a problem, you will naturally want to act immediately. Steam cleaning can be an effective way to remove cockroaches from items. Freezing an infested item from 24 hours to a week can also kill cockroaches. Vacuuming trouble spots regularly is another way to kill all signs of cockroaches in whatever life stage they happen to be in.

Cockroaches are visitors that wear out their welcome in about as much time as it takes you to notice that they are there. If you have noticed signs of cockroaches in your home, it is time to take action. Use Patriot’s Pest Control Library and call our staff for proper identification and extermination.
